About 2630 BC Imhotep, architect to King Djoser (Dynasty III), masterminded the Step Pyramid of Sakkara. The world's oldest freestanding stone structure, this Pyramid consists of six tiers atop a mastaba, or low, oblong tomb, faced with cut stone. This magnificent site includes other Old Kingdom tombs, among them those that hold the earliest known hieroglyphs and The Pyramid Texts (Unas) that were the model for the Egyptian Book of the Dead.
